June 9 2007 By Nikki Tait,Law Courts CorrespondentLong-running, class action-style litigation brought against big drug companies by parents who claim that their children were injured by the triple-jab vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella, appears on the point of collapse.
The High Court judge overseeing the case said yesterday that he would be recommending that the "group litigation" status given to the claims should be ended, because of the small number of claimants who now had the public funding necessary to pursue their cases.
"There is no realistic prospect of any new claims being progressed in view of the unavailability of public funding for the present claims," Mr Justice Keith added. The two remaining cases which did have funding would be able to continue as individual actions, he explained.
The judge stressed that it was the funding issues, rather than the merits of the case, which had driven the decision not to allow claims to proceed.
"It is not because the court thinks that the claims have no merit. Although this litigation has been going on for very many years, the question whether the claims have merit has never been addressed by the court," Mr Justice Keith said.The group litigation at one stage covered more than 1,000 claimants, and in-volved claims against several MMR vaccine manufacturers, including GlaxoSmithKline, Aventis Pasteur and Merck.

Blair touted for EU president job

Tony Blair is being actively touted for the position of the European Union's first full-time president by new French president Nicolas Sarkozy, it has been reported.
Mr Sarkozy has discussed the idea with other EU leaders, including German chancellor Angela Merkel, prior to next week's summit in Berlin, according to the Financial Times.
However Downing Street insisted that Mr Blair had no interest in taking on a new, high-profile political job when he steps down as Prime Minster on June 27.
"The Prime Minister has made it clear that he is not going to return to frontline politics," said a Number 10 spokeswoman.
Under proposals being considered by the EU, the new president of the European Council would be a permanent replacement for the EU's rotating, six-month presidency.
The president would have few formal powers, but would give the EU strategic leadership and represent it on the world stage on issues such as climate change.
