In 1950 the NHS cost around £350 million: the monetary
inflationary equivalent to this, today - from the RPI - is some £8
billion. I see that The Treasury are projecting a £96 billion budget for the
NHS in 2006/7: a twelve-fold increase, in real terms.
The nation's health has deteriorated constantly and
remorselessly since day-one of the service: as the NHS mandarins have
custody of the national health, their actions and omissions are responsible for
this fiaso. Apart from condemning - belatedly - smoking, almost everything
they approve/allow/fail to criticise has a detrimental effect on human health.
Perhaps we could use the rapidly-approaching 1 -
with 11 noughts after it - NHS-cost figure as a "thus far and no
further" line in the sand. Maybe some politician, after all of these
years, will look at the two sets of figures and detect a link: more money,
doctors, drugs, "research", radiation, surgery, "tests",
etc. = more national disease.
When two phenomena run parallel, upwards, for 58 years,
could they be linked?!
