Hoping to avoid
further litigation, GlaxoSmithKline, the world’s second-biggest pharmaceutical
company, agreed to a $63.8 million settlement in a class-action suit brought
against it by users of Paxil and Paxil CR. In the lawsuit, plaintiffs claimed
that Glaxo promoted and marketed the antidepressant for the treatment of
children and adolescents while failing to release relevant information about
the drug’s safety and value.

BOSTON (AP) - Besides extra pounds, dieters also seem
to carry a hefty independent streak. A survey finds that 70 per cent of
Americans who are trying to lose weight are following their own diet plans and
have no interest in seeking a doctor's help.
Of the
1,444 people who said they had made a serious weight-loss attempt for at least
three days, 34 per cent used supplements and 15 per cent used prescription
drugs.
"People need
to get away from magical thinking," said Saul Shiffman, a University of
Pittsburgh health psychologist who helped develop the survey. "It's easy
to hope for a magic pill that's going to rev up their metabolism or shed their
pounds." He and the others involved in the survey were paid by
GlaxoSmithKline PLC, which has an obvious interest in steering people away from
dietary supplements.

Four Israeli adults die after
flu shot
Directly on the heels of a CDC study
purporting to reconfirm the safety of flu vaccines for babies, four Israeli
adults (ranging in age from 52-76) died unexpectedly after receiving
vaccinations from the same pool.
After a one-day moratorium on flu vaccinations, however, the Israeli Health
Ministry lifted the ban, with the country's health minister receiving a flu
shot at the end of a live TV news conference. The minister's own experts
dismissed concerns that the vaccines had anything to do with the deaths.
The vaccines used were produced by Sanofi-Aventis, which has recently been
cited for contamination problems at one of its American manufacturing plants.
