Britian
will aim to become the world leader in controversial stem cell technology which
scientists say could provide cures for a host of diseases.
Mr. Brown
said a new official body with a budget of more than £1 billion a year would
oversee medical research.
The
Office for Strategic Co-ordination of Health Research will be tasked with
pooling the talents of universities, institutes, pharmaceutical companies and
the NHS.
He said
Britain had to transform its research and knowledge into jobs, announcing £60
million a year for applied research with 'commercial potential' in
universities.
The
Chancellor told MPs: 'We are determined that Britain be a world class location
for future medical research, including stem cells.
This puts
him at odds with George Bush, who has refused to fund the research because it
involves the use of embryos.
Stem
cells, found in embryos and bone marrow, have the potential to develop into any
of the body's tissues and experts hope they can be used to produce 'spare
parts'.
But the
British Medical Association expressed concern that the £1 billion 'boost' was
actually a cut. It said medical research funding for 2007-08 was expected
to be £1.3 billion (!)

Pfizer scraps key drug |

Pfizer, the world's largest drug company, has abruptly halted clinical trials of its leading experimental medicine, the cholesterol drug Torcetrapib, after the deaths of eighty-two people during testing. Evidence from the trials, which involved 15,000 patients worldwide - some of them in the United Kingdom - revealed increased death rates from heart attacks and strokes. The abandonment of such a key pipeline drug treatment is a blow for Pfizer, which revealed that an independent safety board had recommended the measures after the trial had shown what was referred to as "an imbalance of mortality and cardiovascular events."
